Every Saturday Kat and I look forward to sleeping in and waking up to watch a movie…However, it never happens.
On Friday and Saturday Kat and I had the pleasure of hosting the fifth installment of SOULVIVOR, with the help of Angelina Zhao. Soulvivor, much like the show survivor, where the name derives from, is a weekend challenge between the members and friends of FISHERS International ministries to outwit and outplay the other contestants through group and individual games complete with alliances. Long story short we saw people run, take turns cutting each other’s hair, eating peanut from armpits, white guys dance, and to finish it all up a man eating a goldfish all in the name of the Lord (game descriptions attached at the bottom).
After the competition that ended around 4pm and all of the alliances had broken up, I tried to gather the group together for a pick-me-up by watching ‘The Dark Knight.’ Little did I know that my amazing wife had been planning for a week to have a surprise birthday party for me at her parent’s house. After showering and rushing to supposedly get to the theatre and stand in line, I opened the door while all of my friends in Canada were shouting to my face…”SURPRISE” and holding the only kind of cake I like – ice cream cake from Dairy Queen. The party was Mexican themed due to my miss Mexican food complete with burritos, tacos, chicken, virgin sangrias, and Latin dance music. I am so blessed to have so many good friends in Canada but most of all two amazing brown parents (claimed by them) and their beautiful daughter Kat as my loving and sneaky wife. But wait…when do I get to watch the Dark Knight?
Kat has taken Monday off from work and has planned to watch four episodes of my favorite show Mystery Science Theatre 3000 which her mother bought for me and also MST3K the Movie and possibly Escape from New York which Kat got for me. Then, Kat is taking me out to eat after which we will meet up with some friends and watch Chris Nolan’s second installment to the batman series.
I LOVE CANADA! As I reflect on just what has happened in the last 24 hours or so it is easy to see the people and opportunities God has put in my life in this past year and what they have meant to me, and all I can say is that I can’t wait for this coming year. - m@
SAMPLE SOULVIVOR 2008 GAMES
NUTELLA RELAY
Items: Jar of nutella, a spoon per team, tissues/napkins/hand towel and water (face wipes)
Divide into teams, stand in line. Place blob of nutella on front player's nose. On 'go' teams are to pass the nutella down the line nose to nose (no hands). The teams with the most nutella on the last player's nose wins.
Alternative: You can use elbows if faces are too threatening.
BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS RELAY
1) Peanut Butter Sandwich
Player will put take given amount of peanut butter and spread the entire amount on their armpit. Their teammate will take all of the peanut butter off with one piece of bread and eat all of it.
2) Dangling Donuts
You need two volunteers from each team. One lies down (on a tarpoline or grass),whilst the other dangles a donut on a string above the mouth of his partner. The idea is the first team to eat the whole donut is the winner but just before they start you have bowls available to dip the donuts in. Use honey, chocolate sauce, etc…
3) Pairs Feeding
Items: For each pair, 1 blindfold, a bowl and plastic spoon (it's safer), cereal and milk, table and chair
Sit player A on chair with hand behind their back. Blindfold player B then get them to kneel behind the chair and place their arms around A. (They will pretend their hands belong to player A.) Place cereal in bowl on table in front of A. B is now to feed A the food. Player A may give instructions.
To make this game more complex you could add a second task, such as drinking something or spreading bread with jam and eating it. Use soft plastic implements wherever possible.
EGG IN HAND RELAY RACE
Items: 1 egg per team, cup or other container per team (to put leftover egg into)
Divide players into teams and devise a relay course to run around. Break an egg into the starter of each team's hands. Each player is to run round the course holding the egg in their hands before handing it on to the next team member. The team with the most egg left wins.
CHUBBY BUNNY (classic)
Items: marshmallows
Have group place a marshmallow in each of their mouths (no swallowing allowed). Go down the line and have each contestant say "Chubby Bunny" with the marshmallow in their mouth. Keep going adding one marshmallow at a time. If someone in the group cannot say "Chubby Bunny" then they are out. Keep going until only one person is standing.
FISH GAME
Items: You need eggs (raw), large fish (not frozen), knee high nylons and blindfolds.
Have players pair up. The smaller of the pair gets on their partner's shoulders and controls the fish and is blindfolded. The partner on the bottom puts the knee high nylon over their head and face and puts the egg on their forehead, held in place with the nylon. The object of the game is to break other pairs' eggs without getting your own egg broken.
