Blog EntryAugust UpdateAug 18, '08 8:00 PM
for everyone

Sorry for all of those who have been checking our multiply and not finding any update on what's been going on with Matt and I.  Unfortunately, my laptop has had a virus in it for the last little while and I haven't been able to go online aside from when I have spare time from work.... Matt has been pretty busy as well...

A couple of weeks ago we were at a youth camp with some pretty awesome people from Fraser valley Alliance Church.  Matt had the opportunity to teach during all the sessions and I was able to serve with the music for the camp.  We should be posting pictures of the camp soon.  We are also planning a sort of "camp reunion"/back to school kick-off rally for the youth taking place this Friday.  We are quite excited about it... all the students have been getting involved and I can't wait to see it all come together.

We are also still getting settled into our new home :) Still waiting for a couch... and we got some extra tables from IKEA for our office that I'm quite excited about.. so I can actually start making my jewelry again... and of course more space for Matt for his studying. We've already been blessed with a lot of people dropping by and spending time with us in our new abode.  I can't wait till everything is all organized and functional :)

Anyways, there are still some exciting updates... but I think I will leave it up to Matt to post on here. Have a great week and I hope to post on here again soon (once my poor laptop is virus free :( )!

After a long day soulvivor Matt prepared to watch the Dark Knight with a group of people. Unknownst to him, the group was part of Kat's surprise birthday party for him. Matt was so shocked that he wouldn't have known what was going on if he hadn't seen his birthday cake.

Every Saturday Kat and I look forward to sleeping in and waking up to watch a movie…However, it never happens.

On Friday and Saturday Kat and I had the pleasure of hosting the fifth installment of SOULVIVOR, with the help of Angelina Zhao.  Soulvivor, much like the show survivor, where the name derives from, is a weekend challenge between the members and friends of FISHERS International ministries to outwit and outplay the other contestants through group and individual games complete with alliances.  Long story short we saw people run, take turns cutting each other’s hair, eating peanut from armpits, white guys dance,  and to finish it all up a man eating a goldfish all in the name of the Lord (game descriptions attached at the bottom).

After the competition that ended around 4pm and all of the alliances had broken up, I tried to gather the group together for a pick-me-up by watching ‘The Dark Knight.’  Little did I know that my amazing wife had been planning for a week to have a surprise birthday party for me at her parent’s house.  After showering and rushing to supposedly get to the theatre and stand in line, I opened the door while all of my friends in Canada were shouting to my face…”SURPRISE” and holding the only kind of cake I like – ice cream cake from Dairy Queen.  The party was Mexican themed due to my miss Mexican food complete with burritos, tacos, chicken, virgin sangrias, and Latin dance music.  I am so blessed to have so many good friends in Canada but most of all two amazing brown parents (claimed by them) and their beautiful daughter Kat as my loving and sneaky wife.  But wait…when do I get to watch the Dark Knight?

Kat has taken Monday off from work and has planned to watch four episodes of my favorite show Mystery Science Theatre 3000 which her mother bought for me and also MST3K the Movie and possibly Escape from New York which Kat got for me.  Then, Kat is taking me out to eat after which we will meet up with some friends and watch Chris Nolan’s second installment to the batman series.

I LOVE CANADA!  As I reflect on just what has happened in the last 24 hours or so it is easy to see the people and opportunities God has put in my life in this past year and what they have meant to me, and all I can say is that I can’t wait for this coming year.  - m@

SAMPLE SOULVIVOR 2008 GAMES

NUTELLA RELAY
Items: Jar of nutella, a spoon per team, tissues/napkins/hand towel and water (face wipes)

Divide into teams, stand in line. Place blob of nutella on front player's nose. On 'go' teams are to pass the nutella down the line nose to nose (no hands). The teams with the most nutella on the last player's nose wins.

Alternative: You can use elbows if faces are too threatening.

BREAKFAST OF CHAMPIONS RELAY
1) Peanut Butter Sandwich
Player will put take given amount of peanut butter and spread the entire amount on their armpit.  Their teammate will take all of the peanut butter off with one piece of bread and eat all of it.

2) Dangling Donuts

You need two volunteers from each team. One lies down (on a tarpoline or grass),whilst the other dangles a donut on a string above the mouth of his partner. The idea is the first team to eat the whole donut is the winner but just before they start you have bowls available to dip the donuts in. Use honey, chocolate sauce, etc…

3) Pairs Feeding
Items: For each pair, 1 blindfold, a bowl and plastic spoon (it's safer), cereal and milk, table and chair

Sit player A on chair with hand behind their back. Blindfold player B then get them to kneel behind the chair and place their arms around A. (They will pretend their hands belong to player A.) Place cereal in bowl on table in front of A. B is now to feed A the food. Player A may give instructions.

To make this game more complex you could add a second task, such as drinking something or spreading bread with jam and eating it. Use soft plastic implements wherever possible.

EGG IN HAND RELAY RACE

Items: 1 egg per team, cup or other container per team (to put leftover egg into)

Divide players into teams and devise a relay course to run around. Break an egg into the starter of each team's hands. Each player is to run round the course holding the egg in their hands before handing it on to the next team member.  The team with the most egg left wins.

CHUBBY BUNNY (classic)

Items: marshmallows

Have group place a marshmallow in each of their mouths (no swallowing allowed). Go down the line and have each contestant say "Chubby Bunny" with the marshmallow in their mouth. Keep going adding one marshmallow at a time. If someone in the group cannot say "Chubby Bunny" then they are out. Keep going until only one person is standing.

FISH GAME

Items: You need eggs (raw), large fish (not frozen), knee high nylons and blindfolds.

Have players pair up.  The smaller of the pair gets on their partner's shoulders and controls the fish and is blindfolded. The partner on the bottom puts the knee high nylon over their head and face and puts the egg on their forehead, held in place with the nylon. The object of the game is to break other pairs' eggs without getting your own egg broken.

Colston Brennan Holbrook was born June, Friday the 13th 2008, and I think weighs 7lbs and some ounces.  This morning Kat and I called my parents before Kat went to work and I don't think I have ever heard my Dad so happy.  He was explaining to Kat how Colston wants to put his hand in his own mouth and then when you don't let him he puts it on his chest.  It was funny to hear everyone breathing heavy when you talked to them, because they wanted to respect the hospital but you could tell they wanted to jump around and scream.  God is amazing and this picture is proof of that.  Congratulations Matt and Mandy Holbrook.

Blog EntryMy New Online Store for Handmade JewelryMay 17, '08 4:04 PM
for everyone

As some of you know, I love to make jewelry.. some of you might have received my handmade pieces as gifts for special occasions, or some of you might have purchased them from me whenever I had a home-show or through my old website.  Well, ever since I've been back in Port Moody people have been asking me if I will get back into making my swarovski, freshwater pearl and glass creations... and so here it is!  Please feel free to browse and share with anyone who might be interested: virukka.etsy.com

I am still trying to list items on there, it is taking me a while as it is a whole process :) but please do check back once in a while to see the updates... I'll also try and post any new pieces on here whenever I can.  Thanks for your support!

Woohoo!!! After four and half weeks of looking for a car we are blessed to have our first car in Canada and we were also blessed to make a friend in the process with Beatriz who sold us the car. It is a 1996 VW Jetta and looks and runs great. After purchasing it we celebrated by eating at a fresh mex joint that was great...no sharky's though. Let us know if you need a ride or help using Craig's List...I pretty much have it memorized -M@&K@

Thank you to everyone who prayed and helped us during our car search.  God has provided faithfully for Kat and I and we are so happy to have this new financial burden :) just kidding.  Its awesome and we would love to drive any of you around Canada, just give us a call.  However, we are bad parents because we haven't even given her a name yet.  Any suggestions?

Blog EntryBack in Port MoodyMay 9, '08 2:20 AM
for everyone

I haven't written on here for a long time. I guess I've been trying to catch up with everything going on... I have tons of pictures that I've promised to post but haven't... thus, the New Years Day pictures that I just posted lately.

Matt and I are settling in, although it's quite easy to get homesick. We miss the Philippines very much. I still have to post pictures of our despididas (going away parties) and the people that we miss and love. Although everytime we go through those pictures Matt and I get choked up. Hopefully when enough time has passed and when we have a more stable internet connection we can post those.

We have been so blessed though during our stay here, God has been so good.  Like Matt might have mentioned in one of his entries, after two days of arriving I was able to get a job at a church ten minutes away from the house. We just got a car exactly a week ago. My parents have been very supportive and we are hoping to move into our own place soon.

The weather has been pretty good so far. Matt and I have been able to go on a lot of walks in several parks - one thing I don't want to take for granted :) ... if you're from the Philippines, you'll know why I said that!

Another blessing is just the people, aside from my parents, our friends, especially from our bible study. Here are pics from Jennie's site... another walk in the park, but this time with friends :)

*Kat

I thought I had posted these pictures already... but I guess since we were in the Philippines it was really hard to do anything online because we kept getting cut off. But, better late than never right?

On new years day my sister and husband decided that they wanted to join the annual "Polar Bear Swim"... they joined over 2000 people swim into English Bay in the chilly winter weather. Most of the people went in costumes and so Matt went in a "Santa" outfit.. by Santa Outfit - I mean Santa Boxers and a Hat and Trish went in a Hula Outfit.

Was tons of fun to watch - but when everyone rushed into the water, those watching started pushing in the excitement... that part was not fun! I think we will do it again next year though if we get the chance :) Enjoy the pictures!
